Christmas Reflection: Infinite and Finite
In 3 BC, a baby was born in Bethlehem. His name was Jesus. He died on a cross on 25th March 30 AD. This brief time made up the period of the Incarnation of God on Earth.
The Incarnation was when the 2nd Person of the Godhead took on human flesh and lived on Earth.
This was where the Infinite Divine incarnated as a finite human. The Uncontainable contained. The only time in history a person has had two natures, fully divine and fully human.
Jesus’ Divine Nature
God is infinite. He contains all multiplicity. All potentialities find their purpose and fulfilment in Him. All things physical and spiritual exist in His grasp. All things, both infinite and infinitesimal bow to Him. Even zero finds its satisfaction in God.
Nothing exists outside of Him.
All things are created, but God is ‘No Thing’, as He is uncreated. He is the Creator.
Jesus is God. His Divine Nature is uncreated, but He inhabited created flesh. This is the unique moment, where the opposites were embodied.
The Infinite clothed Himself with finite. He chose to be contained within a single flesh. He chose to be Earth-bound. The ‘No Thing’ incarnated as something.
Created flesh in which God dwelt, left footprints in the Wilderness. The Embodied God breathed the air as we do today. He spoke, ate and cried. Just like us.
Resolving the Opposites
How could the Infinite inhabit the finite? How could the Incarnation occur? What power could bind these opposite states together?
The answer to all these three questions is Love.
The opposites are joined together through love.
The opposites of Man and Woman join together in marriage through love.
Disputing parties in a family can be brought back together through love.
At Christmas, we see the finite and Infinite come together in the Incarnation and remain together in Christ by His divine love.
His Incarnation knits together the Infinite and finite. The largest possible gap in Reality is bridged only by Him. This means all other oppositions can be therefore brought together in Him as well.
No matter the distance, the enmity or hatred, God’s love shown at the Incarnation can bring all parties together. All just need to be willing to allow His love to work in the situation.
I pray His love will grow in all our hearts this Christmastide and bring us closer in communion with Him.
Merry Christmas
