Before Joseph became the Prime-Minister of Egypt, he went through many betrayals. He was betrayed by his brothers, who sold him into slavery. He was betrayed by his mistress, when she lied about him. And then he was betrayed by the Cup-Bearer, who forgot all about him when he was restored to the Pharaoh’s court.
Similarly, Christ was betrayed by His disciples, by His own people and by the Temple priests.
At one point of the story Joseph finds himself in prison. The Chief Baker and the Chief Cup-Bearer soon join him.
Genesis 40 v 1-3
Some time later, the king’s cupbearer and baker offended their master, the king of Egypt. Pharaoh was angry with his two officers, the chief cupbearer and the chief baker, and imprisoned them in the house of the captain of the guard, the same prison where Joseph was confined.
After a while, his two companions had a dream. The Chief Cup-Bearer had a dream about a three branched vine which he squeezed the fruit into a cup and handed to the Pharaoh.
Joseph interpreted the dream and said that within three days, the Chief Cup-Bearer would be restored to his position in Pharaoh’s court.
While the Chief Baker’s dream was about how he had three baskets of white bread on his head, but the birds came and ate them. Joseph explained that in three days you head will be decapitated and you will be hung on a tree. The birds will then feed on your body.
All this came to pass.
In a symbolic manner, Jesus is both the Chief Cup-Bearer and the Chief Baker. In their dreams, the Cup-Bearer’s grapes are crushed and the Baker’s body is broken.
The Baker’s body is lifted up on a tree and the birds feed on him. And like Christ, the Bread of Heaven, the nations of the World come and feed on His body through the Eucharist.
And as the Chief Cup-Bearer goes to Pharaoh, Christ ascends to God and presents Himself. His life crushed and the shed blood offered to God as a sacrifice to atone for the sins of humanity.
Jesus is symbolically like Joseph too. From prison, the depths of Hades, He is raised by God (the Pharaoh of the Heavens) and is given All-Authority, the Highest Place, and a throne on the right hand of the Eternal Father.
