Lot is the nephew of the patriarch Abraham. Terah, his grandfather, had three sons, Abram, Nahor and Haran.

Haran died after Lot was born and so Terah looked after him.

Haran, Lot’s father, means ‘mountain people’ and strangely this is also the region that Terah moves to when he leaves Ur of the Chaldeans.
