Through this series, we have looked at the occurrences of the Nephilim in history. Now, let’s look at our modern times and I would propose they still walk among us.
The Nephilim are described as creatures who have both a physical presence and a spiritual presence. After all, they are born from angels and humans.
Genesis 6 v 1 - 2
Now when men began to multiply on the face of the earth and daughters were born to them, the sons of God saw that the daughters of men were beautiful, and they took as wives whomever they chose.
It is as though they exist within the crossing, the luminal space, between the physical and the spiritual realms. So with this can we define Modern day Nephilim?
The American phenomenon called Big Foot has intrigued many people over the decades. Some are ‘believers’ and think the creature is a cryptid, while others point to the lack of physical evidence, like no droppings or hair samples. They say it is all made up.
Most anecdotal stories of Big Foot are not physical, but spiritual. Many who say they’ve experienced Big Foot, explain it has filled them with dread. Some may not have seen it, but simply feel its presence. It appears to be almost physical, and spiritual at the same time.
We see something similar with alien abductions. They tend to be at night, especially while a person is sleeping. These experiences are disorienting and leave the victim confused. They feel like they are being physically touched, but when people awake, no one is there.
Some people channel aliens. They come across to me as they are almost possessed. They speak with an altered voice and spout dictates, provide secret knowledge and encourage ‘secular spirituality’. The physical evidence tends to be anecdotal or fake, but alien watchers still keep a look out parts of spaceships.
I think aliens and Big Foot are Nephilim, because they meet the criteria of influencing the physical space as well as the mental or spiritual.
We could even include ghosts in this category. Everyone has a ghost story or some weird experience where they notice something and then look again and it’s gone, leaving a feeling of dread. Most don’t talk about these experiences, as it might make them look mad, but they are quite common.
I would also include dragons amongst the Nephilim. There are so many stories from the medieval period talking about these creatures, including St George.
By moving these phenomena into a separate category, not physical or spiritual, but Nephilim. We can begin to define and understand them. We can realise that they exist in some form. Not wholly physical or spiritual, but somewhere in-between.
Demon possession is a complex area of theology, and even though a first century Jewish Christian would think that this was a Nephilim, some Modern Christians would be unlikely to accept it.
Whatever our demonology, possession by Nephilim were considered real by the New Testament Bible writers. And if we accept their ideas, then we could include their view into this novel category of Nephilim.
So what is the opposite of a Nephilim? These creatures are produced through the intimate interaction of a man, a woman and a demon. In contrast, the Christian is filled with the Holy Spirit. So could a Christian be the opposite of a Nephilim? I am not sure, but we could be.
I think science should start to think about this extra category. By not considering it, it deprives us of better understanding of the Creation we exist within.
Have you read any of Dr. Michael Heiser’s books on the topic? He goes into a lot of fascinating detail on this topic, as well as other spiritual beings, angels, demons, etc.
Ever listen to Blurry Creatures? This is their jam. Great podcast and community to think through these kinds of topics!
