I then re-read Genesis chapters 1-10.
In these 10 chapters, no human tells a lie. With Cain, he may have killed Abel in a place the two were visiting for the first time. We don't have his return journey, so he could well have gotten lost, especially with the adrenaline coursing through his system.
Whether Cain lied or not, murder has been with us longer than has lying.
